New York abortion law approved what it really implies

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) - New York State authorized one of the country's most grounded assurances for absortion rights Tuesday.

This was a move that state heads said was expected to shield those rights should the United States Supreme Court topple Roe v. Swim.

Despite the fact that premature birth is legitimate in New York, the bill shifts state law. One noteworthy change this year, grants for a late-term fetus removal to protect the strength of the mother.

Supporters said this aligns with Roe v. Wade; while opponents, on the other hand, said it does wrong by stretching access to late-term abortions.

"A woman was entitled to have an abortion up until the time of viabiltity and that word viabiltiy means up until a fetus could live outside of the womb," said Chemung County Legislator Christina Sonsire.  "It also said that a woman could have an abortion past the age of viability to protect the womans life."

According to Sonsire, this is a movement to align federal and state law. "The courts and not the legislators that are best suited to decide matters of abortion, " Sonsire said.  "So, it's going to be the courts with the final say."
